Shamanic Journeying

(META-BREATHWORK FOR SPECIFIC SHAMANIC JOURNEYS, HEALING AND SOUL TRACKING)

Through the inner journeys one can learn to heal loved ones’, family members’, friends and self. You can learn to divine information and communicate with the spirit world. Learn of your totem or power animal and spirit guides/ helpers; these include plant and animal spirits, ancestors, gods and goddesses of an archetypal nature.

  • Learn how to track and retrieve souls. (missing parts of Self).
  • Experience the luminous energy fields, (auras etc).
  • How to Shapeshift (fully associate and align with an animal or entire collective spirit of the species i.e. eagle).
  • Creating a sacred space.
  • Learn to travel safely through the inner worlds.

The Shamanic experience draws on a vast body of ancient and indigenous knowledge more than 5000 years old and has an inter-connected and organic worldview where everything has a spirit and an intelligence.

True Shamanic healing comes about when our souls are restored and intact and our vision is awakened to the experience of infinity and eternity in place of the human constructs of space and time.

A one on one lesson or a group workshop that will shift perception and open the doorway to extraordinary experiences.

SHAMANICS

My shamanics grew out of my combined studies of Martial Arts, breathing techniques, personal visions and dreams and the many wonderful and varied experiences of my friends, clients and students who did journeys with me.

I realized something very special was happening early on when people, me included, began to get what I callsecond order information': that which isn't generally available to us in our waking, conscious state but becomes easily accessible in extra-ordinary states of consciousness. This is also known as 2 nd attention: the deepest, intuitive part of our mind. True Wisdom, no less. This deep, inner wisdom which we all possess is a prerequisite to the blossoming of personal genius within us all. Shamanic states provide access to this genius.

Shamanism is animism – everything has a spirit, every blade of grass, every grain of sand, the wind, the trees, the earth, a grasshopper… By accessing shamanic states we fully participate in this wonderful child-like frame of mind where we attribute to the world an animacy that is generally missing from modern adult consciousness.

Our present scientific worldview is seriously challenged when we embark on shamanic journeys. When our consciousness expands beyond the boundaries of time and space we experience a limitless universe; a dazzling journey through inner space. We learn that our brain chemistry allows us access to other realms of existence, identification with our ancestors, animals, plants, encounters with intelligent non-human presences, faeries, spirits, elementals, angels, mythical beasts… The possibilities are endless and always fantastic. The experiences are profound and enlightening.

My sessions are drug-free, that is to say we don't ingest any substance that produces psychedelic effects but rely purely on the bodies wisdom to release its own highly psycho-active chemicals that aid our shamanic journeys. This is achieved through using techniques discovered whilst journeying in altered states and not from any text-book.

I use the term ‘Shamanic' to denote an ancient, primal, potent way of entering into parallel worlds and alternate universes utilizing techniques used by Shaman for millennia, a timeless knowledge regardless of what year we live in or what culture we belong to.

It is my belief, based on the evidence of many personal experiences and that of clients/ friends/ students, that we have never lost our innate wisdom, our deep sense of connectedness to our planet and all its inhabitants, animal, vegetable, mineral, spirit e.t.c. It's there to be accessed, lying just a breath away beneath the surface of our social and cultural conditioning.

Shamanic work brings us face to face with our true self. That core part of us that is deeply and profoundly connected to the ancestors. We find our sense of spiritual belonging. It is like coming home. We've searched and searched and finally our journeys bring us back to the beginning, back to our bodies and back into inner space. We discover we are the One experiencing Itself through Its multiple and varied expressions of life as we know it. We discover we can experience any one of these expressions for ourselves…

THE PINEAL GLAND: ITS PHYSIOLOGY AND INFLUENCE ON SHAMANIC STATES

The pineal gland is a cone-shaped pea that sits on the roof of the 3 rd ventricle of the brain, directly behind the root of the nose (3 rd eye chakra) floating in a small lake of cerebrospinal fluid. It is our body's biological clock and has been called a window of the brain because, as with all mid-line structures bordering the 3 rd and 4 th ventricles of the brain, it doesn't have a blood-brain barrier. Instead it relies on a constant supply of blood via, considering its miniscule size, a particularly rich vascular network. It was considered for many years to be as redundant as our appendix but this theory is brought sharply into question because, in our body's infinite wisdom, the pineal gland has been supplied with the best blood, oxygen and nutrient mix available other than that received by our kidneys! It acts as a receiving mechanism capable of monitoring electro-magnetic fields and helping align bodies in space. With its central hormone, MELATONIN, the pineal not only regulates sleep/ wake cycles and the aging process, but also appears to act as the Mistress Gland (sofia)* orchestrating the body's entire endocrine system and thus, energetically speaking, the chakra system. I believe it is also responsible for shamanic states, visions, kundalini e.t.c.

The pineal gland is unique in that it sits alone in the brain whose other parts are paired. It is the first gland to be formed in the foetus and is distinguishable at 3 weeks. When our individual life force enters our foetal body at 7 weeks, the moment in which we become truly human, it passes through the pineal and triggers the first primordial flood of DMT ( N-dimethyltryptamine). Later, at birth, the pineal releases more DMT. DMT is also capable of mediating pivotal experiences of deep meditation, shamanic states of consciousness, psychoses, spiritual emergence and near death experiences.

The pineal gland begins to harden with calcified tissue starting at adolescence. These strange calcified deposits between 3-5 mm are called “brain sand”. There are asymmetrical crystals in the pineal gland that are ‘piezo-electric' - that is, they send out electronic voltage creating EM waves. Whenever a person is exposed to an EMF (electro-magnetic field) such as that of the earth the gland vibrates, sending out EM signals to the rest of the body. When the pineal gland is stimulated geomagnetically it produces alkaloids similar to plant psychedelics. Any strong change in the earth's EMF will produce a rush of psychedelics in our bodies enabling us to be more psychically active in shamanic states (earth/ land receptive). The pineal gland is effected by coherent EM fields and it changes its hormone production when exposed to EM at low levels. As the earth has the greatest effect of any force on our physiology it makes sense that the cells of our body and brain align with it. All life within the envelope of earth's vibrational influence attempts to match base-frequencies (entrainment) with that of the earth. To this end, each of our cells is constantly shifting patterns of energy to achieve harmonic resonance with the reference signals of our earth. Our bodies are truly amazing and they are intimately co-dependent with the earth and all its inhabitants. Our bodies are miraculous organs of phenomenal complexity and awesome ability. We are made up of multiple trillions of molecules, each vibrating with its own intelligence, all interlinked just as our universe is interlinked and interconnected. We reflect the whole. A picture may be beginning to emerge as to how we reach shamanic states through the wisdom of our body in tune with the earth.

When we experience a shamanic journey our pulse rate increases at the same time that our blood pressure drops. This is also what happens as the body is preparing to die. As the life-force leaves our body through the pineal gland, another flood of DMT is released. I believe that the initial stages of a shamanic journey replicate this near death experience and so triggers DMT release in the brain.

NOTE: Yagé or ayahuasca, a brew made from so called ‘death vine' which is used as a ‘plant teacher' by shaman to induce shamanic states, is virtually the chemical equivalent of DMT in humans.

I believe that shamanic work combined with breathwork brings large volumes of oxygen and life-force into the bloodstream and, because of its excellent blood-supply, the pineal gland receives much stimulation from the oxygen/ prana drenched blood causing it to resonate/ vibrate thereby stimulating the release of DMT, our body's own powerful psychedelic. Lore has it that the pineal gland is the gateway into the soul. An energy vortex; a meeting place between psyche and soma, soul and body.

Ancient people knew of the importance of the pineal gland. Magician, Delores Ashcroft-Nowicki says that to the priests of Heliopolis, the embalmers of ancient Egypt (who were the forerunners of today's pathologists), the Star Chamber of Isis (the Holy of Holies) and the Halls of Anubis and Thoth were not just fanciful terms given to mythical locations but were actually places within the living brain where the priests and priestesses travelled to be taught by the gods.

The following is a description of The Star Chamber of Isis given by a priest of Isis undergoing the Rite of the Meeting of Mind with Mind:

“ The corridor is long and narrow and gleams like the inside of a shell drawn from the depths of the sea. The curtains that guard the entrance are of the softest gossamer, so fine that they seem like mist on a lake at dawn. As I pass through them I come into the presence of the Gods. The walls are of silver and give off a faint silver light that illuminates this holy place. Beneath my feet is the sandy silt of the sacred Nile, and all about me I hear the heartbeat of Isis . Behold, I dwell in the Star Chamber of the Goddess.”

The above sounds remarkably like the physical description of the pineal gland, which lies deep within the head, an important link to our deepest selves.

Tantric techniques attempt to produce enlightenment through sexual ecstasy. Pineal DMT release can mediate sexual ecstasy resulting from the strenuous exertion, intense emotions and pneumocatharthis (intense dynamic breathing). It is known that psychedelic features do emerge during orgasm. The link between conscious waking state and deep Shamanic consciousness is BLISS/RAPTURE, feelings associated with intense sexual pleasure.

NOTE: The secret sex techniques of the Shamanka (female shaman) still in practice in certain rural areas of Brazil , Mexico and South America all, generally, involve breathing techniques.

* Early medieval documents and alchemical texts refer to the ‘fallen' or lost Sofia – the allegorical term for the lost wisdom and innocence of mankind. Sofia is also represented by the fairytale “The Sleeping Beauty” where a prince has to toil through a hazardous ancient haunted forest to reach the sleeping princess. She has been sleeping for 100 years in a tower and can only be awakened by a kiss (the breath).

SCHUMANN RESONANCE

Schumann Resonance, or the earth's heartbeat, is not generated by the earth itself but by the 400 or so lightening storms that occur around the globe at any one moment. These storms emit the electricity that causes the Schumann Resonance.

Schumann Resonance helped evolve our brain-waves. Alpha brain-waves, those associated with a relaxed, awake yet meditative/ reflective in-the-now state are set in motion by the earth's heartbeat. Our alpha rhythms (7-12hz) are related to extremely low frequency EM signals circulating around the earth and our central nervous system is tuning in and listening to them.

During a shamanic session I induce my brainwaves to slow to a range of between 7-12hz (alpha). My brainwaves entrain those of my subject and we synchronize. We are both resonating at the same frequency (sympathetic resonance) which is very close to that of the EMF's of Beloved Earth. My brainwaves and those of my subject are then in sympathetic resonance with the earth, allowing us to draw from a universal energy outside of myself (or alternatively, inside myself as world is self) and the pulsed biomagnetic signal produced by me penetrates my subject's body/mind with ease.

“The mind is a part of nature; the world is a divine dream, behind nature, throughout nature, Spirit is present.” – Emerson.

BLISSING: WALKING IN SHAMANIC CONSCIOUSNESS

Walking the earth in shamanic consciousness – open, wide-awake awareness is something that creates a state of BLISS; That liminal state that acts as a bridge between this world and the Otherworld. Fully engaging the body and its sensory systems allows you to be fully present whilst at the same time sensing the parallel realms. These realms exist as a planetary consciousness, and the beings that dwell there reside within the land. They are known to us as Faery, people of the light.

By tuning in to the earths rhythms we also make contact with our ancestors who once walked the earth.

When we truly engage in embodiment, through our senses, we begin to experience another level of reality, allowing us to realize we are much more than the sum of our parts. We re-enchant ourselves and have peak experiences. We become aware at an intuitive level of a non-local reality. This is a doorway into the secrets of nature. Earth-walking or blissing is a way for us to recognize the sacred in nature and to begin to re-envision the planet. Einstein said: “matter is nothing more than energy vibrating at frequencies low enough that we can perceive it with our senses” .

When our own frequencies tune in to the earth's resonance we begin to perceive that which is normally invisible to us: the life force around plants and trees which shimmers around every living thing. Movements in the air become noticeable to the eye and you can physically and energetically feel the life force emanating from the earth and trees.

The purpose of blissing is to totally immerse yourself in nature, with your senses wide-open, body grounded and centred, walking in dynamic poise (posture is all important, see KINETIKA for martial arts connection) .

Walking in shamanic consciousness is the important flipside of shamanic journeying where we go inside into an altered state of consciousness to experience/ learn/ heal in the Otherworld. Blissing counterbalances the ‘internal' shamanic states by bringing us mindfully into full conscious awareness where we use an alpha brainwave rhythm to help us fully connect to the present moment. This brings about a shift in perception known as Primary Process: childlike, archetypal daemonic mind. This is a psychophysical way of being that fully interacts with the physiological, emotional and mental aspects of our entire being.

Blissing, then, can be known as a super-normal state of consciousness into which we can enter temporarily in everyday life. It is a highly specialized state that requires moment to moment attention and intention.

Before you begin your walk you must prepare with an intention: To walk in a state of reverence. Every breath, every footfall is to be undertaken as a sacred act. The affirmation or mantra I use as I earthwalk is “Love and Gratitude Beloved Earth” but you can devise one suits your own purpose. I also use “Blessings upon my Ancestors”, “Blessed are the Fey”, “Blessings upon my global family” e.t.c. The very act of walking is a testament to your expression of love and gratitude.

Before embarking do an exercise called “Hook-ups”

or a few cross lateral movements such as; right elbow to left knee, left elbow to right knee. This balances the brain and helps bring the heart into a coherent rhythm.

THE BLISSFUL HEART

The heart has its own sensitivity to the earth and exhibits that with intelligence. The heart constantly monitors our entire environment, both inner and outer. It sets up a Heart Rate Variability pattern that is either coherent or incoherent . This HRV is relayed from heart to brain via the vagus nerve to the medulla oblongata, the thalamus and the amygdala. Our goal is a blissful coherent heart.

“The heart is the source of our intuition which is eventually perceived at the brain/ mind level” – Rollin McCraty.

Our hearts are made up of multifunctional sensory nervous tissue which is receptive to hormones, information peptides, changes in pressure and nervous stimulation originating from within the heart. The heart is a highly complex, self-organized system (sensory organ) with its own fully functioning “little brain” that communicates with and influences via the nervous system, hormonal system and other pathways. ( All information chemicals; the neurotransmitters, are also found in the heart)

The brain energetically revolves around the heart and not the other way round . The heart is like a constellation unto itself in the body. The heart operates by itself, the beat of the heart resides in each of its cells and is controlled within the heart by a pacemaker.

Our hearts are powerful transmitters sending out EMF waves (it has the largest EMF in the body extending to at least 8–16 feet, over 5 metres from the body). Other people, animals, plants, trees, rocks e.t.c. pick up these transmissions of the heart through the physical antennae – the elaborate sensory apparatus of the whole body – and in particular the pineal gland.

When the heart is Blissed (coherent, happy, peaceful, connected, e.t.c.) in other words, tuned in, we influence people and other life forms in a positive way. When it's incoherent, the heart's influence is negative.

Earthwalking, Blissing, walking in shamanic consciousness brings the heart into an optimum, blissful, coherent state that resonates through our whole being. Walking in shamanic consciousness relieves and eradicates chronic stress. When stress is chronic it brings the heart into incoherence which then becomes the usual state for the person suffering the stress. The stress/ incoherent state becomes homeostatic for that person and they may feel uncomfortable around you expressing your coherent homeostasis. Stand close within their heart EMF and do “hook-ups” for one minute to restore balance and to entrain their heart to yours.

ONE HOUR BLISSING

  1. Set your intention (to connect reverently to nature).
  2. Have an affirmation.
  3. Adopt a posture of dynamic poise/ alignment (see Kinetika ).
  4. Do one minute of hook ups/ one minute cross lateral exercise.
  5. Walk in full sensory awareness, imagine breathing bliss into the heart and bliss out into the environment.
  6. Walk in nature wherever possible but remember wherever you are, the unseen world reverberates all around you and the earth is below your feet.

FAERY

Faery is to me the first and last enchantment. It is everywhere and nowhere, betwixt and between in the gap between this rock and that tree… There exists a luminous land, not quite memory, not quite imaginary, just shimmering and glimmering on the edge of reason that beckons seductively to our wild heart. That un-named, untamed part of us that runs with the wild things. It is in this part of our heart that the two worlds meet, ours and theirs. Interwoven inextricably with the world of form that we know and understand, is the world of the shadow, the numinous, the land of the dazzling fair ones. It is the realm of the ancestors, our connection to the sacred land. We connect to faery and all its beings through shamanic journeying, through blissing and lucid dreaming, and by practicing keeping an open coherent(blissful) heart.

It is said in faery lore that only those who are pure in heart may enter the realms of faery. I understand this to mean child-like innocence (Primary Process) and deep unbounded reverence for their earth.

My song swells

From a wildness

Feral, unbound rapture

As one with the woods

Golden mosaic of fallen leaves

This is me.

Musk earth in my nose

Stirring passion, lust grows

Topaz shimmers through emerald

Sun god sparkles on pond

Deep mythic green breathes me

Bewitching my eye, I see thee

Spellbound by society, you see me not

I merge with dragonfly

In the wink of an eye.

I am the wilderness

I inhabit the twilight

Dusk is my dress

The reeds, my hair.

Darkness falls like the wolf

I blend with the night

I cast nightshade

On my wild place

By standing stone

And twisted tree

By ancient mound

And faery rath

I dance the ring

With the wind in my hair

And the earth in my veins

I wear the stars as jewellery

And melt into the gloom

I feel my inner sense aflame

I walk like poetry

Frail as bloom

My magic uncoils

Like the serpent of eden

And my earth desire, taboo, forbidden

Burns like the white hot moon

Moonstruck am I , the hidden

And made of thunderstorm

I am the forest

I am the stag

I am the owl

I am the hare

I am the night

I am the dark stream

I am the mystery

I am fey

SHAMANIC BREATHWORK SESSION

TRANSCRIPT FROM A META-BREATHWORK/ SHAMANIC JOURNEY

COURTESY OF DAN 2005

From the seemingly unnatural darkness, and seemingly forced breathing arises a calm. It is a deep calm that could be associated with absolute familiarity. Performing this action that I had never had any cause to undertake before, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. Sensation begins at the temples. A release, an unscrewing. I felt my forehead expanding outwards and my ears gently pulling towards my spine. Each time the breath is repeated the pleasant sensation of light electricity and minute temperature change spreads around the head, into the neck, and across the shoulders. Very aware of the eyes, which feel turgid and excited, beneath the eyelids. Coming into tune with different rhythms. The rise and fall of the breath, the subtle monotonous drone of the music, which seems to be emanating through the entire body becoming a natural rhythm in itself; and the heart-beat which can be felt pounding in the chest, resonating around the blood vessels.

The first overt physical feelings began in my hands. As the breathing continued they seemed to fill with an energy not dissimilar in feeling to pins and needles, but far more intense and without any discomfort. As I felt them growing in size and strength and changing their shape I held the out in front of me to test out the way these new appendages felt. Opening and clenching of the fingers became a very pleasant experience; on clenching a slight outward resistance, like squeezing snow into a ball. On stretching out again the feeling of having strong metallic rods lying alongside the bones of my fingers, sliding into place and taking any work out of the movement. My hands, which were held out in front of me, became visually manifested in front of me as two golden white lights. Unlike the physical feelings, which came on gradually, the visual experience began abstractly, but quickly became very intense and crystal clear. Around the lights that were my hands I noticed the movement of a black mass, which shimmered into deep greens as it moved. I knew at once the feeling of a presence surrounding and permeating me, as the feeling I had encountered on a previous shamanic journey when I came into contact with my spirit counterpart, a dragon whose name I still haven't a clue how to spell. Instant recognition and rapport, coupled with both a physical and a mental closeness. I began to feel myself in close contact with this being, my body pressed against its vast hulking back. Then I saw my hands clenched tightly in front of me holding fistfuls of hair, and I knew we were flying, but I could only look down, towards the floor. Knowing that my hands were capable of hanging on for me, without my concentration I began to take notice of the water below. Black water, glimmering with silver, rushing past at high speeds as we flew over it. I became entranced by the patterns and beauty of this silver against the cold black, and noticed that the silver was also reflecting on the scales of my dragon. Throughout this flight I felt an irrepressible smile spreading throughout my body, manifesting itself in an enormous grin I could feel my face straining under the size of. Sheer beauty and the simple enjoyment of this beauty caused in me a bliss that took the grin to its next natural stage of laughter; which rippled through my entire body, just before I got the urge to take a deep breath and hold it. Within this held breath, the silver patterns were intensified ten fold. I saw other beings dancing in the silver…and could only gawp in awe and wonder. My body began to convulse, and although aware of this going on, it didn't feel like I suppose it must have looked. To me it felt like a powerful ball of energy at the very core of me, somewhere in my torso or lower back was simply dissipating outwards; but I also knew that my limbs were displaying a more forceful reaction. After the shaking came a calm. An enjoyment of winding down from the heights; a return to a more natural breathing pattern, and to more familiar thought patterns. But then something in the music, or something done around my body-a touch, or the introduction of incense, or a breath would catch me again, and a thought would begin urging me to resume the breathing pattern, without stopping.

This cycle played through a total of five times, including the first; starting with a gradual increase in bodily sensation, followed by the introduction of a visual element. This then transcending into clarity and bliss, before returning, slowly to a more normal state, at which point, apart from the last the urge to begin again was roused by an inner voice.

The first cycle was very visual, the second and third were far more physical. In the second the feeling of a gathering energy that had begun in my hands the first time around, began this time in my chest. My torso began to feel huge; As If I would struggle to touch my fingers together across it. This time when the flight began I could look up and straight ahead. Instead of holding onto the dragon, it and I were one…one chest at least. I saw us coming up fast on a mountain range, which the flight over was the cause of my second held breath. The purples and blues of ice-caps on mountains in absolute detail had me twitching with delight. The second and third cycles ran into each other quite a lot, so it is difficult to separate them, but, on my way down from the awe of the mountain tops, I realised that we had travelled deep inside one of them, into a warm, dark place surrounded by gold. Absolute contentment is the only description worthy. I knew what it was like to stay in one place, in one position for hundreds of years; just content to be in this cave, in the presence of this gold. The return of the physical feeling this time came strongly from my legs, particularly my thighs. This is where the contentment seemed to emanate from; as it did, my back arching, increasing the pleasure sending twinges right down to the bottom of my spine and out into my buttocks. At this point everything became wonderful. Moving my head a few millimetres to the left then to the right caused sheer delight. Whilst raising my knees up to my chest bordered on the orgasmic.

At the end of this third cycle I thought I was through. My body felt like it had been charged to the point where it could be charged no more. It was then that thought came into the equation where until now it had been absent. I feel that this, the fourth cycle was the most intense of all. My emotions became involved, at a very highly charged level. Feelings of inadequacy turned inward to form self hate, and anger. I was being challenged, at my most basic level. Are you worthy? Of what, I can't pin-point…worthy of existence? Worthy of the kind of knowledge that an inward journey may reveal? All I knew was that I had to respond to the challenge, in the only way that I could; by intensifying the breathing, by proving that I could take what ever this journey had to offer me. It was not easy; I began to feel pain in my chest and across my forehead. I had been forewarned about pain, and told to use it as a tool, and so directing my guide to these points of pain, I began to steer into it. Through clenched teeth each breath became an ordeal. My feet clawed at the blanket, as did my hands; and as I continued my rage grew, and as it grew my strength and ability to go on increased. This was the crossover point. There was a place where I was in so much pain, but so ready too go on, that the silent challenge relented, and became congratulatory. In the time that followed I was shown all the secrets of the universe. Eternity, humanity, acceptance and love, love, love. Joy incarnate was I; stripped of everything and shown what exists underneath it all, and instilled with the knowledge that no-matter how bad things look, or unlikely it may begin to seem, that what we believe and hold dear is not a false hope. I wept with joy, I kissed the hands of my guide, grateful with every grain of my being. Then the blinding light that had been switched on began to dim down. But I wasn't upset, as my new knowledge told me not be, as such things cannot be perpetual; but we can find joy in the knowledge that we have known them, and know that we may return, whenever we wish. I was left with a beautiful purple sphere floating in front of me, reminding me to take heed of what I had seen, and never to forget. As I returned to my more normal state, this purple orb came towards me, and fused itself into my chest, leaving a bright aura all around me.

This was the end of the visual journey for me. At the end of the fourth cycle I became aware of my surroundings. Much more so than before; I became aware that I had been sweating, and that the blanket was damp. When I felt the urge to continue with the breath work rising in me, I wondered if I should follow it or not. I did follow it, but the cycle did not follow the course of the preceding four. There was no build of physical or mental stimulus; it was more like a prolonged plateau of pleasure, which came from the mind as an echo of the bliss from the fourth cycle, combined with the bodily pleasure of the first three. The sprinkles on the frosting on the icing on the cake was the big wonderful hug I received from my guide as I opened my eyes.
